I’m sure in Rotherham some people may have been wondering what that brown package was that slipped through their letter box sometime in the last week or so and of course opened it up to find that the ten years is up and another national census is being conducted.
For some of us who were too young to remember the last I’ll let you in on what it’s all about and for those of you who are old hats to this time honoured if out-dated method of gathering statistics I’ll fill you in on the proposed changes this is expected to undergo.
Firstly, I’m sure some of you are wondering, what is the national census and what does it do for us? Well, every decade the government sends a form out to each and every household in the country, so of course this affect Rotherham too. Mostly it concerns information regarding the number and ages of people in the household, marital status, ethnic group, transport method(s), employment etc. The information obtained from this means that the government can plan ahead for services that will be needed e.g. schools, health services etc. The information can give a snapshot of the country at the time that it is conducted, showing how it has changed from the previous 10 years before. It gives a representation of the total population in the country, in each county or in each town/city. It can also give an indication as to the age range of the population as a whole and in certain areas, as well as what kind of jobs they do and the houses they live in.
The National Census has come under criticism and is something I personally agree with in that the current method is ineffective as the statistics only reflect that moment in time and soon becomes out-dated. Also, there will be people that slip through the net and don’t fill in for varying reasons and for those that do fill it in, there’s always the chance that somewhere they’ve lied or made mistakes. I think the government gathering information through other means directly is a good idea as it’s likely to be faster, more accurate process with valid current information. On another note though, some people have been criticising the government for holding the census amid financial upheaval however, I personally think this is a good idea. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion on this but as I previously stated these figures help the government in where to invest and spend money, so they don’t waste money where it’s not needed. Then when you consider the amount its costing compared to the debt we’re in and the budget they have each year it’s not really very much.
Don’t let yourselves get caught out though, the census must be complete by the 27th March, failing to do this could set you back £1000 if you forget.
Let me know your opinions on this census or how you think it’s likely to affect you by leaving a comment.
