If you’ve been following the local news you’ll be aware that RCAT College is due to go on strike for a day this week.
My question is, how does striking for one day benefit anyone? From my perspective all lecturers are achieving is temporarily venting their frustrations and achieving nothing from it, while their employers are laughing all the way to the bank when they have ever so many people they don’t have to pay for the day.
Hype and attention was drawn to our local college as this is the first strike action it’s taken in five years, but really what is the point?! If lecturers across the country really wanted recognition of their protests they’d do it for longer than a day or at a really inconvenient time e.g. toward the end of the educational year when exams are being done and work is due to be marked for completion of students courses, it would make it particularly difficult for those students wanting to go into higher education, which would certainly gain the attention of people and get them noticed.
Perhaps it’s just lecturer’s seeking a more passive way to demonstrate their objections, but what good does waving a picket do for anyone for a day, especially if it doesn’t accomplish anything.
As someone not working within that sector I suppose I can’t really say all I know is if I wanted something done I’d be making life pretty inconvenient for people until they took notice and actually did something, rather than getting pushed around or out of the way and made to suffer cuts in silence.
I guess it depends on which way you look at it, because whatever you do students will also suffer, but similarly why should people in that profession, imparting their knowledge and wisdom to the younger generation be penalised and have to bare the brunt of cuts in the colleges etc.
In the case of our local college however, little to nothing is honestly expected to be achieved, leaving the whole event as something rather pointless, still suppose it is their right to do so and I’m sure the students won’t complain at an extra day’s holiday!!!
Perhaps I’ve been a bit harsh, but that’s my opinion, I’d still like to hear yours and you can leave me a comment and tell me what you make of this situation.
