1. Blade Runner
Ridley Scott’s Sci-fi masterpiece! A film opening questions to how we live and our worth in life, our origin and what it is to be human, set in the finest of Sci-fi dystopia backdrops. Shot perfectly with one of the best cinematography viewable on film, it sets the scene and draws you into the world like no other film. Filled to brim with the finest Sci-fi vibes and perfectly crafted sets, Blade Runner is so deep it makes the abyss look like a puddle. Deadly acting by everyone involved, especially Rutger Hauer who drops some of the best improv known to man! ’All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain’. If you don’t dig Blade Runner then, you know nothing.
2. The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou
Wes Anderson is directing god. Every film he’s directed is tops, number two could easily be anyone of them (Rushmore, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Royal Tenenbaums) but out of them all it has to be Life Aquatic. Its the touching story of Steve Zissou a washed out, arrogant oceanography recently contacted by a lad claiming to be his son. Hell bent on killing the shark who killed his best friend, Life Aquatic is a roller coaster ride of relationships and character building at its finest. You feel like you know every character in this film, and shot through Wes Anderson’s vision it has all the quirkiness and weird comedy you learn to love. Wes doesn’t let any detail go un missed with his perfectly crafted world, every camera movement, line, angle, and prop is 100% his vision which makes his films timeless classics which are a pleasure to watch.
3. Amelie
Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s fairytale love story set on the beautiful streets of Paris. Its pretty hard not to like this film, to start with it stars Audrey Tautou who is one of the most stunning women alive. Its also shot so perfect and beautifully, with absolutely amazing cinematography, and oozing with quirky, innocent charm. I think we all hope relationships would work like this, and have that mystery, and I think thats why this film is so amazing, it doesn’t include all the negative **** that comes with finding your true love. Put down your Kate Hudson romance trash and buy this!
4. Dead Mans Shoes
Northerner Shane Meadows jaw clenching British revenge film set on the mean streets of Matlock. I can remember clearly sat at preview of Dead Mans Shoes, totally drawn into this harsh tale of one mans revenge mission to fight his own guilt about his brother. Shot to make you feel like a by stander in this cruel tale of down right misery and bullying to the highest degree. You feel every emotion from every character in this absolutely gem of a film. Paddy Considine is the man not to muck with!
5. Twelve Monkeys
Terry Gilliam’s Sci-fi / Apocalyptic countdown film staring Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis. This film always seems to get brushed aside but its an absolute classic. You’ve got Brad Pitt running around the shop being an absolute nutcase and Bruce Willis playing a convict sent back in time to stop the end of the world, what else could you ask for?
6. Leon
Luc Besson is one of the world’s best directors. This list could pretty much have been half his films, but out of them all, Leon is definitely his best. Set in New York its the story of a hitman and devastatingly orphaned youth hell bent on revenging her families death. This film keeps you at the edge of your seat the whole way through, it slowly builds and builds until a climatic ending that is so damn cool you wish all your mates were like Leon. Gary Oldman plays one of the best movie villains with his terrifying relentless and total nihilistic attitude ’I haven’t got time for this Mickey Mouse bull****!’
7. Old Boy
Chan-Wook Park’s revenge masterpiece. Part of his revenge trilogy this is his most outstanding, not to say Sympathy For Mr Vengeance or Lady Vengeance aren’t good films. This just puts the bar that high even the sky is finding it hard to jump it. When I saw this film, I got handed 2 preview tickets with the line ’A guy gets locked in a box for 15 years, enough said’. Clearly I weren’t going to avoid this film, and thank god I didn’t. This film takes you all over the shop, charging from beginning to end with some of the most touching and grimmest moments caught on celluloid. The fight scene shot at one angle is just…something else. Oldboy also has one of the best movie twists, which really does question how you would react in that situation. Its a gnarly revenge film, shot beautifully, wicked acting and obvious Chan-Wook Park quirky ness. If you’re ever gonna watch world cinema, what this.
8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Michel Gondry’s love story staring Jim Carey and Kate Winslet. I generally can’t stand Kate Winslet and avoid most things she’s in, but in this film she really work. It also has one of Jim Carey’s best movie roles, other than Andy Kaufman in Man On The Moon. This film is a mind bending love story set through different periods in a couples relationship asking the question, would we fall in love all over again if we lost all memory of a passed love? Eternal Sunshine is a totally fresh take on this genre that is touched by no other, which is no surprise as its wrote by residential weird **** Charlie Kaufman. p.s Also stars Kirsten Dunst…enough said.
9. V for Vendetta
James Mcteigue’s story of one mans mission to shake a corrupt government controlled dystopia Britain. This film really draws you into the world of V. Shot so perfectly with some wicked fight scenes, lovely sets and some of the best movie quotes you can draw out of one film. This film keeps you glued to your seat all the way through, feeling the true passion of V as the film progresses, until its finally which is so strong with moving you feel like marching down London and causing chaos against government. If any film makes you feel proud to be British and want to stand up, its this. - Also stars Natalie Portman which we all know brightens everyones day!
10. Donnie Darko
Richard Kelly’s debut film. Nothing he’s done since has touched Donnie Darko. Which makes you think you’re either expecting more, which is pretty damn hard as Donnie Darko has hit the nail clearly or he’s a one hit wonder. Donnie Darko got released once and slipped totally under the radar, this film was made to be a classic, after a couple of years it got another realise which finally brought this film to the recognition it deserves! I have no idea what this film means, and I think if you try and work it out your a brave man. All I know is, its shot perfectly, soundtrack is killer, it has one of the most recognisable movie character ever so often popping up to freak out a terrified Donnie. It has a pretty naive and subtle love story. Whats not to like? Instant classic.
