I must admit that I do have a very eclectic taste when it comes to films so when I was asked to choose one to write a review on it was a really hard decision.
However after wracking my brains going through the whole of Quentin Tarantino’s back catalogue, the Bond franchise, Toy Story and Monsters Inc the film I have chosen to talk about is Disney Pixar’s Up.
I am a real fan of animation films because I believe they appeal to so many people on so many different levels. They are light-hearted, funny, visually dynamic, easy to watch, have characters that are easy to relate to, didactic in essence, always have a moral undertone to them, feature a villainous and heroic figure and appeal to all ages from 2 to 102.
As the film starts the audience are treated to a montage of clips showing the loving, long lasting relationship of Ellie and Carl. They appear to be a pretty ordinary couple who are best friends when they’re children and progress into an amazingly devoted couple. As I don’t want to spoil it for people who haven’t seen it let me just say the film has a twist, which will leave the audience a little speechless to say the least.
However as the film progresses Carl who is a balloon salesman has the brilliant idea of tying thousands of balloons to his house to go off on an adventure.
As he sets off he does not realize that Russell, an Eight-year-old wilderness explorer, trying to gain his elderly badge, is knocking on his door in mid air.
As you can imagine mayhem ensues and together they embark on an amazing adventure and meet some great characters on the way including talking dogs, an evil villain and a rare bird called Kevin. These characters become funnier as the film progresses the humor is not slapstick or un-tasteful at all it just seems to add to the characterization and makes the key protagonists easier for the audience to empathize with.
There are some lovely visual gags but a deeper, more thoughtful, touching and poignant message is conveyed throughout this amazing piece of cinema and even though it is only two years old I am pretty sure that this film will become a classic and urge anyone who hasn’t seen it to give it a watch. I’m sure you’ll love it.
