A new Scheme is to be launched in Rotherham and South Yorkshire to make it easier for people with Mobility Scooters to travel on public transport. First and Stagecoach are working together with the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to launch “The Scooter Code” as part of a national initiative.
From this week passes will be available to scooter users after a free assessment is made of their scooter by either Stagecoach or First, it is called the Scooter Permit. It will show the driver that the scooter the person is driving has been assessed and is suitable to travel on their bus.
An official “Scooter Start Day” will be held in Sheffield Transport Interchange on February 22nd from 10.30am till 3pm. On the day, assessments will be carried out and information provided to the public. Groups who represent older disabled people will receive a letter as well as shops who currently sell mobility scooters.
David Brown, South Yorkshire Transport Executive director general said “we want users of mobility scooters to be as clear as possible about which buses they can get on. That’s why this new pass is being introduced that will make it clear to all permit holders and bus drivers.
It isn’t an alternative to a fare card and users will still need to show a concessionary pass or pay their normal fare”
Powered wheelchairs will not be affected and wheelchair users will be still use buses as they currently do. To have a free assessment contact either Stagecoach or First bus company.
Do you think this is a good idea? Or will there be arguments between passengers on mobility scooters, disabled people in wheelchairs and pushchairs?
