How to create an Event

Here on site we have an event listing promoting the various organised activities laid on by groups on the site. Anyone can add an event so we’ve produced this guide to help you in producing your own event to add to the list, here’s how.

Navigate your way to the events page, this can be found under the ‘Quick Links’ drop down menu displayed at the top of every page. Once on the page select the green ‘Create’ button at the top, if this is not displayed ensure your logged in or sign-up to the site and this will appear. You’ll then be presented with a form to fill in starting with the ‘Title’ of your event. Try to keep these fairly short and to the point as people can tend to skip over lengthy entries.

Next you can add a thumbnail image that will display alongside your event in the listing helping to draw people’s attention. To do this click on the image which will pull up a box where you can search for a previously uploaded image or ‘Upload’ a new one. If you’re uploading a new image you’ll be taken to another box where you click the left hand icon ‘Upload Media’ for pictures. (The other icon allows you to upload video content). After this you can select a file from your computer and ‘Send’ and ‘Save’ it to the system where it should then appear on the form. If not click back in and you should find it by either searching or on display as the most recent picture you’ve added.

A ‘Short Description’ is then needed, try to keep it around 150-160 characters long, you’ll have more space to add the finer details and information concerning the event. This description acts as a teaser that is also displayed in the listing and offers a brief bit of information to tempt the viewer in to read further. As with all forms on site when adding something you’ll need to input your Keywords, these are words that reference anything concerning the article. Try to think of words likely to be searched that relate to your event. By adding these there is a greater chance of it appearing in numerous places across the site and in searches.

Next you’ll need to add some contact information e.g. name and a homepage if you have one. You can then add the location for which your event is occurring. If you click in the box you can select an existing location from our index of venues, if however your venue is not listed you have the option from a button below to add it, allowing you and others if necessary to select it from the listing next time.

The option to add a ‘Main Image’ is next and is selected and uploaded as explained earlier. This can be the same or a different image to the thumbnail and is recommended as it makes the event look more interesting and can help entice people to view it further or to participate.

The next field is ‘Details’ where you can now write-up and sell your event to people. There’s no word limit on this so you can use the opportunity to input some descriptive detail and information about your event. If possible though, try not to go overboard with the amount of text; people want to know what’s going on but there unlikely to read masses and masses of text. After this you can ignore the other many listed options and boxes until you reach the bottom of the form. Here you can choose the date and time your event is scheduled to run. It’s worth mentioning that If you have an event that is scheduled to run a number of times you can customise your event from the box, letting you choose different dates and times that will all display under this one event, so if people can’t make one they can see others available. It will also continue to appear in the main listing until the last date listed has passed. After this you can then click the green ‘Save’ button and your event should now appear in the listing.
